HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Pfeiffer University men's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matchups Sunday afternoon, first dropping a close decision to Sacred Heart (7-10) and then defeating host Coker (4-15). Following the 0-3 loss to Sacred Heart and the 3-0 win against the home team, the Falcons improve to 8-8 on the season and maintain the .500 record they entered the weekend with.
The first match of the afternoon was about as close as it gets. In game one of the match the Falcons found themselves in control for almost the entire first half, leading Sacred Heart until the 10th point of the contest. With Pfeiffer roaring out to a 10-6 lead, Sacred Heart scored five unanswered points to take the lead 11-10. Despite four ties over the next several rallies, Sacred Heart picked the lead back up at 16-15 and never relinquished it again. Game two of the match was a completely different animal, with Pfeiffer leading almost the entire set. The Falcons controlled the score and the tone in the second game, allowing only three ties and maintaining the lead for the entire rest of the set. Pfeiffer appeared to run out of gas however, and eventually surrendered to Sacred Heart in game two, 26-24. The third and final game of the first matchup ended up in Sacred Heart's favor, 25-22.
The Falcons were led offensively in the first match by sophomore Wyatt Hamilton who finished with eight kills as well as junior Michael Brewer who finished with seven. Despite only knocking down the seven tallies, Brewer hit .545 for the match and chipped in on two of the team's assisted blocks. Pfeiffer was lead defensively by junior David Specian who finished with 26 assists and a team-high four digs.
The second matchup of the day saw Pfeiffer take on host Coker, and while proving to be as close as the first match, was an entirely different result for the Falcons. The Falcons took early control of the match, winning game one 25-20 following a monster kill from sophomore Sonny Hirini. Game two was dominated by Pfeiffer despite five tied rallies and was punctuated by a Hamilton kill, giving the Falcons the win, 25-22. Game three proved to be the tightest battle of the afternoon, with Pfeiffer only relinquishing the lead once and the score finding its way to a tie a total of 18 times. With the score tied at 25 apiece, Brewer smacked a kill into the heart of Coker's defense putting the Falcons up 26-25 and bringing up match point. The Falcons claimed victory following a Coker ball-handling error on the very next possession.
Pfeiffer was led offensively by junior Joe Supko who knocked down a team-high 12 kills and Brewer who contributed 11 kills of his own. Sophomore Kevin Ecklund led all players defensively with nine digs for the contest, and Specian chipped in a game-high 36 assists.
The Falcons will now take the week off for Spring Break and return on March 10th to face Erskine in Merner Gym. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
