Charleston, SC---Falcon swimmers took an offer of a last minute opportunity to race Division 1 schools College of Charleston and Georgia Southern University on Saturday afternoon in Charleston. Head Falcons' coach Hannah Hawkins, herself a Georgia Southern swimming alumni, said of the meet, "It was great for us to go up against such tough competition so early on in the season. Unfortunately we had already told our team they could take the beginning of Pfeiffer's fall break to go home and see their families for a few days. This meant we were only able to take those who did not already have flights booked. With just 9 guys and 5 girls we were still able to give the Cougars some great races in the Men's meet, and maybe we surprised them in a few events." The young Falcon team did just that, pulling out two great wins by freshman Kevin Parks in the 200m breaststroke and Edwin Torres in the 400m freestyle. There was never any doubt about the winner from the moment Parks hit the 2nd turn, his natural stroke kept him lengths ahead to win by almost 10 seconds. Torres had to fight a little more, and he came back after what was for him a disappointing 2nd in the 200 free to do battle in the 400m with Cougar Eric Lehman. The first 300 meters was a stroke for stroke battle, before Torres gained the lead and ultimately won by over 3 seconds. Sophomore David Angell and Marc Kourie combined to show the Falcons strength in the 200 backstroke, taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. Kourie also swam a strong 100 back, while Angell came in a very close 2nd in the 200 IM. Kourie also pulled out a fast third leg 50 free in the relay to enable a tiring David Angell at anchor to hold onto a second place relay finish. Other standout performances came from Freshmen Patrick Porter with some great relay swims and a 3rd in the 50 free, and TJ Havens who was a challenger in both breaststroke events and was just touched into third both times. Senior Alicia Phillips demonstrated that her breaststroke is on form, after some strong early season 200 workouts, with close 6 and 7th place finishes in the 100 and 200 meter events. Said Coach Hawkins, "This was a big meet, we ran the 16 event program, which is something we don't do a lot of the time. We had to leave some events and lanes empty, and the longer short course meters pool definately gave them something to think about. We stayed positive, learned some important lessons, and had an awesome team spirit the whole time. We're very excited to get our full roster out there now and show people what we can do. The teams have come a long way in a short time, and the real fun is about to begin." |
