|Misenheimer, NC---Mario Garcia scored a "golden goal" with 20 seconds left in the first overtime to give the Pfeiffer men's soccer team a 2-1 win over visiting Catawba Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons improve to 2-1 on the season hile Catawba now stands at 0-1. Catawba scored in the first half and held the lead until the final twenty minutes when Pfeiffer tied the score setting up the exciting finish. |
Catawba had control early on and in the 27th minute Troy Brown scored to give Cartawba a 1-0 lead.
The teams fought back and forth the rest of the half but neither one had a real good scoring chance as both defenses played well.
At halftime it was 1-0 Catawba.
Pfeiffer came back and controlled most of the play in the second half. Davi Lorenzo just missed tieing the game in the 54th minute. After a nice cut-back pass by Cash Knight, Lorenzo sent one that was headed fro the top of the goal but the Indian keeper got his fingertips on it to deflect it just over the bar.
The Falcons kept the pressure up but Catawba played solid defense to hold the lead. Finally in the 72nd minute the Falcons tied the game. Mario Garcia sent a pass that slightly deflected off a Catawba defender into the path of Matt Harris who calmly slipped the ball under the charging goalie and into the net for his second goal of the season.
Andrew Landry had a great chance to give Catawba the lead back in the 74th minute but Falcon goalie Alex Moreno made a brilliant save to keep the game tied.
Pfeiffer had a couple of chances late but their shots went wide.
Both teams fought hard in overtime but with time running out in the first overtime Mario Garcia broke free and put it past the keeper to give Pfeiffer the win, 2-1.
Pfeiffer will next host UNC-Pembroke this Friday at 4:00 pm .
