LAURINBURG, N.C.-Sophomore midfielder Justin Garton scored both Knights goals including the game-winning penalty kick in the first overtime to advance No. 4 seed St. Andrews Presbyterian College past visiting No. 5 seed Pfeiffer University in quarterfinals of the 2006 CVAC Men's Soccer Tournament on Wednesday.The Falcons, who end their season 8-8-0, took a one-goal lead in the first half on a junior midfielder Cihan Nuhoglu goal.
Nuhoglu dribbled into the SAPC box, beat a defender, and then drilled a shot inside the near post at the 24:02 mark.
Pfeiffer carried the 1-0 advantage into the second half until Garton struck in the 54th minute. Sophomore defender Jamin Ferris served a long pass to Garton inside the Pfeiffer box. After making a nice trap and turn, Garton booted the tying goal just under the crossbar.
The game remained deadlocked at one apiece for the final 36 minutes of regulation and the next six-plus minutes of the first overtime until freshman Brendan Greehy was yellow carded in the 97th minute for taking down a St. Andrews player inside box.
On the ensuing restart, Garton ripped the penalty kick into the middle of the Pfeiffer net as freshman goalie John Britt was diving.
The Falcons had a 12-8 shot advantage but sophomore netminder Nick Stevens made seven saves allowing St. Andrews to make the come-from-behind victory. Britt finished with three saves for Pfeiffer.
