| SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba held off visiting Pfeiffer to claim a 10-9 win in baseball action on Tuesday night. The Catawba Indians improve to 20-10, while the Falcons fall to 15-17. Pfeiffer had jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. The Falcons benefitted from a pair of Tribe errors and capped the frame on Kevin Oquendo’s three-run homer. Chris Ahearn, for Catawba, tied the game at 5-all with a grand slam in the fifth. A bases-loaded walk with no outs to Josh Strickland in the seventh put Pfeiffer back on top then Furr entered for Catawba and allowed just a sacrifice fly to Bryan Braxton to limit further damage. Catawba trailed 7-5 with two outs in the seventh, but Chad Baker got a RBI single and Jerry Sands walked to load the bases. Query stepped in and laced a 2-1 pitch off the wall in right center to give the Indians a 9-7 lead. Pfeiffer got a run back in the eighth on a home run by Shawn Coke and trimmed the lead to 10-9 on a double by Bryan Braxton in the ninth. A single by Will Davis put runners at the corners, but Furr got Hayes Hinson to ground into a double play to end the game. Pfeiffer travels to St. Andrews this weekend. The two teams will play a double-header on Friday starting at 12:00 pm followed by a single game on Saturday also at 12:00 pm. |
