| MOUNT OLIVE , N.C. –Mount Olive defeated Pfeiffer 101-82 in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball Tuesday at Kornegay Arena. The game was the conference opener for both teams. Mount Olive (3-0 overall, 1-0 Conference Carolinas) was held to one field goal in the first five minutes and trailed by as many as eight points, but Streeter’s putback with 10:42 left in the first half capped a 14-2 run and gave the Trojans a 17-13 lead. Pfeiffer (0-3, 0-1) came back with eight unanswered points as Jeff Pettiway and Chris Woods combined for all the points in the Falcons’ scoring run. The Trojans trailed 29-25 when Aaron Dobson’s three-pointer with 5:29 left ignited a 10-0 run as Mount Olive took the lead for good. Pfeiffer got as close as three, but Dobson’s layup with 11 seconds left gave the Trojans a 44-39 lead at the break. Mount Olive built the lead to double digits in the first two minutes of the second half as Mike Holloman opened the half with a putback and two free throws, and Shaughnnon Washum’s three-point play with 17:57 remaining extended the Trojans’ lead to 53-41. The margin stayed in double figures the remainder of the game. After Pfeiffer pulled within 10, Mount Olive scored eight points in a span of 64 seconds and Craig Hayes’ three-point play with 12:54 remaining gave the Trojans a 72-50 lead. The margin grew to as many as 31 points after Josh Brown’s three-pointer with 9:53 left made the score 85-54. Pfeiffer scored the last 10 points of the game, the final eight points by Robert McGriff. McGriff led Pfeiffer with 19 points and six rebounds. Woods finished with 12 points, while Pettiway and Alvin Slaton added 10 points apiece. Pfeiffer plays host to the Bobby Lutz Invitational Friday and Saturday. Pfeiffer will play Brevard at 7:00 pm Friday. Mars Hill will play West Virginia State at 5:00 pm Friday. |
