PFEIFFER DEFEATS #2 RANKED QUEENS
Sunday, 03 February 2008
Pfeiffer University point guard Robert McGriff scored 10 of the final 13 Falcon points to lead Pfeiffer to a 93-87 win over #2 East regionally ranked Queens at the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte, Saturday night. Queens had erased all of ten point second half Pfeiffer lead to go up 83-81 with 2:55 to play. It was the first lead of the second half for the Royals when McGriff went to work. He scored on a driving pull up jumper to tie it up and then made a 3-pointer on a pass from Thomas Carr following a huge Chris Woods offensive rebound to give the Falcons a three point lead with 1:42 to play. Carr made two free throws on the next possession and McGriff made four in a row sandwiched around a rebound on each end to ice the game. Queens took a 12 point lead early in the first half before Pfeiffer rallied to go into halftime with a 10 point led of their own. It was another first place game for Pfeiffer as they are bunched at the top of the standings with Mt. Olive and Queens.

McGriff finished with 21 points on 7-11 shooting and had six rebounds in just under 20 minutes in his 4th game back from a broken foot that kept him out seven games. Logan Call had 18 points on only 10 shots and was a force throughout the second half. Woods, just a freshman, continues to shine and had 17 points and 12 rebounds including two of the biggest rebounds of the game over the final minute and a half. Thomas Carr had 14 points and four 3-pointers as well as six rebounds and Derrick Truesdale had 11 points and six rebounds. "What an incredible win over a very good Queens basketball team," said Pfeiffer coach Dave Davis. "Queens made an incredible comeback on us but our guys answered. We have won games this season in so many different ways but tonight again showed the heart and character of this group. Robert's 3-pointer was the shot of the game and Thomas was so unselfish to find him. Chris Woods was so tough inside and got game winning rebounds. Craig Thomas kept a free throw miss alive that was also a game winning play, Logan was unstoppable and Derrick Truesdale is making consistently strong plays. Thomas made his 3-point bombs at such critical junctures of the game. We probably had more fans at the game than Queens did and the support from our folks was immeasurable. Our new players have been doing great things for us but tonight it was our veterans who stepped up and led us in a difficult environment against one of the best teams in the East. This was our seventh game in 15 days and I know our guys were tired but you could not tell it by the way they played. We beat the #1 (Mt. Olive) and #2 ranked teams this week and had a big win in between over Limestone, now we get a few days to rest up and improve."

The Falcons defeated Queens in Charlotte for the 5th consecutive year and for the 9th time in their last ten meetings. Pfeiffer defeated Queens earlier this season in Misenheimer, overcoming a 16 point second half deficit by outscoring Queens 61-36 in the second half, to win 97-88. It was the 9th win in a row this season for Pfeiffer, 15-4 overall and 11-2 in Conference Carolina's. Pfeiffer was ranked #8 in the East this past week before knocking off the region's top two teams. Mt. Olive is tied with Pfeiffer for first in the loss column with two and Queens now has four. Pfeiffer's next game is at home Thursday vs. Barton at 7:30PM.
