| Misenheimer, NC---Robert McGriff hit a lay-up with 3.7 seconds left to lift the Falcons of Pfeiffer to a 90-88 victory over Barton Thursday night in men's basketball action. Six Falcons scored in double figures as Pfeiffer won their 10th game in a row. With the win Pfeiffer improves to 16-4 overall and 12-2 in the conference. Barton falls to 14-7 and 10-4. Three freshman led six Pfeiffer players in double figure scoring. Chris Woods led the way with 16 points, Quintel Maxwell had 15 and Jeff Pettiway had 14 points. Alvin Slaton had 11, Logan Call had 10 points and seven rebounds and McGriff had 10 points, nine rebounds and six assists. McGriff scored the final eight Falcon points over the last two and a half minutes of the game. Pfeiffer won despite shooting only 38% for the game, but had 21 offensive rebounds and only four second half turnovers. The win moves Pfeiffer into a first place tie with Mt. Olive, the #1 ranked team in the East region. The win over Barton who is ranked #8, gives the Falcons their 3rd victory in the last four games over regionally ranked opponents. "It was another down to the wire win for our guys," said Pfeiffer coach Dave Davis. "Barton has won the league the last two years and we have had a difficult time with them, but tonight we would not be denied. Barton made comeback after comeback but these guys answered each time. Chris had 16 points on only seven shots. Q was 3-5 from the 3-point line. Jeff made big shots all night and had three assists and these are freshman playing against the national champions. 13 different guys contribute to this win and having six in double figures makes us a difficult team to scout. Each game we have different people step up and make plays. Alvin Slaton, who has been in a mini shooting slump bounced back and had 11 points on 3-5 shooting. Merner gym was packed as we got tremendous support from the community and the students were outstanding. The Pfeiffer Pfanatics and Merner Maniacs were in full force and gave us an excellent lift as the 6th man tonight." Pfeiffer travels to Erskine on Saturday and then to Lees McRae next Wednesday, before returning home a week from Saturday February 16th for a game with Coker. |
