|Mount Olive, NC---Pfeiffer (11-7-1) men's soccer team lost 2-1 to Queens University (10-5-3) in the Conference Carolinas Tournament semi-finals on Friday afternoon. |
Queens (9-5-3) got on the scoreboard in the 19th minute when a foul in the box led to a penalty kick. Massey put home the pk to give the Royals a 1-0 lead.
Queens added a goal in the 30th minute when Aaron Doyle played a ball to the box and O’Donnell scored far post as the Royals went into halftime on top 2-0.
Queens had only two shots through the first 65 minutes of the match, but both shots resulted in goals. Queens was playing against the wind in the first half. Pfeiffer outshot the Royals 10-5 for the match.
Pfeiffer (11-7-1) played most of the second half a man down after a Falcon player received his second yellow card of the game. But the Falcons kept Queens off the scoreboard, then cut the lead in half late in the game after a Queens foul in the box. Matthew Denton converted the penalty kick in the 87th minute to put Pfeiffer on the scoreboard, but that was as close as the Falcons would get.
“We did what we had to do early and then hung on late. The wind made it tough all day on both teams.” Queens head coach Fred Norchi.
“It was a great game between two evenly-matched teams. I thought we played better in the second half, but Queens ’ keeper came up big.” Pfeiffer head coach Ken Hassler.
