Pfeiffer loses in Semis 2-1
Friday, 27 October 2006

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Mary-Ashley Davino's header in the 85th minute off of Jackie Groff's restart from midfield lifted top-seeded Queens to a 2-1 victory over No. 4 seed Pfeiffer in the semifinal round of the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Friday afternoon.

Neither team was able to take a shot in the first 26 minutes of the contest and the match remained scoreless until the 64th minute when a Queens foul led to a Pfeiffer penalty kick. Maria Reis converted the penalty kick to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. But the Royals answered with a penalty kick of their own 10 minutes later as Kari Byzewski tied the match in the 74th minute.

A Pfeiffer foul led to a Queens restart in the Falcon half of the field. Groff played the ball from 35 yards out and Davino won the ball in the box and headed it in the back of the net at the 84:46 mark. Pfeiffer had one last chance on a restart in the Queens half with less than a minute remaining, but Royals goalkeeper Kristin Kornacki was able to cover the
ball in the box before the Falcons could get a shot.

Pfeiffer outshot Queens 9-6 for the match. Kornacki and Pfeiffer goalkeeper Jennifer Lindow recorded two saves apiece.

Queens improves to 14-4-0, while Pfeiffer's season ends at 16-5-0.
