Pfeiffer scored the tying goal in the 87th minute during a late-game downpour as Mount Olive and Pfeiffer battled to a 3-3 tie in Conference Carolinas women's soccer Wednesday at Amon Field. The match was called without an overtime period due to the weather and field conditions.
Mount Olive (3-6-2 overall, 2-1-2 Conference Carolinas) erased an early 1-0 deficit when Caitlyn Wright played a restart from midfield to Jacobs in the right side of the box. Jacobs carried the ball to the right post, got the Pfeiffer goalkeeper off her line and scored inside the far post to tie the match at the 18:50 mark. Pfeiffer (5-6-2, 4-1-1) needed only 54 seconds to regain the lead as Niki Reis played a corner kick from the left corner to Angela Beale, who scored from 18 yards out. Reis also assisted on the Falcons’ first goal at the 14:24 mark, chipping the ball through the Trojan back line to set up Kristen Bartsch for a one-on-one. Pfeiffer led 2-1 at halftime. Pfeiffer came close to adding a goal in the opening seconds after intermission as Kerth beat the Trojan defense off the second half kickoff, but her 20-yard shot was just wide to the right. The Trojans would soon go on to tie and take the lead, scoring a pair of goals less than four minutes apart. After most of the contest was played under a combination of sun and clouds, the final 10 minutes were played in a downpour that got progressively worse. Numerous balls came to a complete stop in newly-created puddles. The Trojans kept the ball on the Pfeiffer side of the field for most of the final 10 minutes until a Pfeiffer counter-attack led to the tying goal. Megan Blevins dribbled from the top of the attacking third and played the ball to Kerth just outside of the top left of the box. Kerth waded her way into the box and scored from 16 yards out to tie the match at the 86:50 mark. At the end of regulation, the center referee met with both head coaches and after several minutes of discussion, the match was called and declared a draw. Pfeiffer starting goalkeeper Suzie Hinman recorded three saves in 64 minutes and backup keeper Heidi Karashiewicz notched one save in 26 scoreless minutes in goal. Pfeiffer travels to Due West, S.C., Saturday at 1 p.m. to face Erskine in Conference Carolinas action. |
