Salisbury- The weekend didn't start very good for the Pfeiffer softball team, as they dropped a pair of games on the first day of the Catawba Softball Tournament. The University of Indianapolis scored early and often in route to a 12-2 decision in game one before seeing North Georgia College better the Falcon's 8-1 in game two. Pfeiffer came back strong on Sunday as they defeated the Wingate Bulldogs by a score of 4-2.
The game remained a pitchers duel until the bottom third inning. With one out in the bottom of the frame Stephanie Bethea walked, right fielder Martina Bullard bunted her to second to set the stage for starting pitcher Dacia Ijames who drove the first pitch she saw over the left center fence giving the Falcon's a 2-0 lead. Junior third baseman Jaimee Cassidy then followed with a solo shot to dead center which extended the Pfeiffer lead to 3-0. Wingate scored a run in the top of the sixth inning cutting the lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the sixth Pfeiffer shortstop Sarah Moore got things started with a one out single to left, junior second baseman Stephanie Brandt followed with a single and first baseman Jessica Culler doubled to extend the Falcon's lead to 4-1. Wingate did score one time in the top of the seventh but the rally fell short as Pfeiffer hung on for a 4-2 victory. Ijames went the distance in the circle surrendering 2 runs on 3 base hits, she walked 2 and struck out 4. In the second game of the day Pfeiffer just couldn't get anything going against Kutztown State and fell to KSU by the score of 7-0.
The Falcon's return to action Tuesday as they host conference rival Coker. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00
