Pfeiffer’s Athletic Director/VP for Athletics Bob Reasso has announced the hiring of Tooey Loy as the new women’s basketball coach, effective immediately. Loy has 17 years of Division I coaching experience at nearby High Point University and was twice named the Big South Coach of the Year.

“We are delighted to appoint Tooey Loy as our new women’s basketball coach,” said Reasso. “Tooey brings a great deal of experience as a DI coach to our program and I am sure he will do a great job with our young women.”

Loy was the assistant coach from 1994-2001 for the Panthers before being promoted to Head Coach in June 2001. In his 10 year stint at the leader of the High Point women’s program, the Panthers never finished lower than fourth place in the conference and won the Big South regular season title in 2007. Loy’s 2009 squad became the first Big South team to defeat an SEC opponent as they topped the Florida Gators 75-68 in Gainesville, Fla.

Loy led High Point to its first postseason appearance in 2007 when they took on Charlotte in the Women’s NIT. He twice took the program to the Big South Conference finals and coached the Big South Conference Player of the Year in 2006. He was named the Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2007 and finished his career with a 163-135 record, including an 88-56 mark in the Big South.

Tooey also spent four years as a point guard at High Point from 1990-94 where he averaged 8.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists during his career. In total, Loy spent 21 years at High Point as a player and a coach.

Loy has spent the past two seasons as the top assistant at Young Harris and Queens University and inherits a program that went to the NCAA tournament in the 2012-13 season.

“I would like to thank President Miller, Bob Reasso and the Pfeiffer administration for this incredible opportunity,” said Loy. “Pfeiffer has a rich history of basketball success and my staff and current players will start today on building more success. The student athletes, Pfeiffer University and supporters of the University will get my very best.”
