MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Three Falcons earned Conference Carolinas Player of the Week honors as announced by the league this afternoon. Matt Chavers won the Field Athlete of the Week, Makenzie Pennell earned softball hitter of the week honors and Bjorn Barwinski was the men's tennis player of the week. These three join Molly O'Friel who was named women's lacrosse player of the week yesterday to give the Falcons four honorees.
Chavers, a junior from Culpepper, Va., picked up a first-place finish in the weight throw for the Falcons at the Finn Pincus Invitational hosted by Roanoke College. He would set a new Pfeiffer record with his throw of 16.57 meters.
A freshman from Taylorsville, N.C., Pennell had a stellar weekend to kick off her collegiate career. She posted nine hits for a .600 average with two doubles and two homers. Pennell's week was highlighted in a win over Queens, as the freshman crushed a two-run walk-off homer to propel the Falcons to a 5-3 win over the Royals. In her first career at bat, Pennell laced an RBI single and didn't slow down the rest of the weekend.
Barwinski, a junior from Dusseldorf, Germany, led Pfeiffer to a 1-1 week after going 4-0 on the week in singles and doubles play. In a narrow 5-4 defeat to Methodist, Barwinski notched a 6-4, 6-0 straight-set victory at No. 2 singles and a 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles. In a 9-0 win over William Peace, Barwinski never dropped a set, winning his No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-0 and No. 2 doubles match 8-0.
