Pfeiffer Baseball Extends Streak to 10 With DH Sweep of Oglethorpe
Misenheimer, N.C. (April 2, 2019) –The Pfeiffer University baseball team extended their winning streak to a season-best 10 games after sweeping a nonconference doubleheader against Oglethorpe University by scores of 9-8 and 13-5 at Joe Ferebee Field on Tuesday.

Pfeiffer was able to build an 8-0 lead in game one, as the Falcons struck for five runs in the second inning. Following a leadoff single from Kirby Lambert, Chaston Gordon roped a double to center field, plating Lambert for the first run of the frame. Ira Dorin then singled in Gordon to make it 2-0. After a Bryan Kowalski walk, Zach Ferrell delivered a two-run double to put the Falcons up 4-0. Another walk to Mason Striplin put runners on the corners and Bryce Marsh then knocked a single to right field, scoring Ferrell to make it 5-0.
Pfeiffer added a pair of runs in the third inning to go up 7-0. Bryan Kowalski drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0, then with bases loaded, Striplin drew a walk.
Another Falcon run crossed in the fourth inning courtesy of a Chaston Gordon solo last to left center, putting Pfeiffer up 8-0.
Oglethorpe then put together a comeback, scoring three runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to tie the game at 8-8.
After a scoreless eighth inning, Pfeiffer gave up a leadoff double in the top of the ninth, putting a runner in scoring position with no outs. Falcon pitcher Bryce Marsh then forced a groundout a fly out and struck out the final Oglethorpe batter to end the threat.
In the home half of the ninth inning, with one out, Kirby Labert reached after being hit on a 1-2 pitch, then Gordon would double down the left field line, putting runners on second and third with one out.
Ira Dorin provided the walk-off hit when he singled down the third base line on the first pitch he saw, driving in Labert from third as the Falcons took the 9-8 win.
Dorin finished the game 2-of-5 with two RBI while teammate Chaston Gordon had a great offensive outing, going 3-of-4 with two RBI. All three of Gordon's hits were for extra bases, as he clubbed a pair of doubles on the day including a solo home run to left center in the fourth inning.
Zach Ferrell also finished with a pair of RBI, going 2-of-4 on the day with a double.
In game two, the Falcon offense kept clicking, as Pfeiffer struck for six runs in the first inning. The big hit came when Kyler Fairchild smashed a grand slam to left field, capping the scoring in the inning, with Pfeiffer leading 6-0.
The Falcons added runs in the second and third inning to jump ahead 8-0, but Oglethorpe plated three runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to draw to within 8-4.
Pfeiffer answered in the sixth inning, as they pushed across five more runs to establish the 13-4 lead. In the frame, Dorin, Fairchild, Ferrell and Mason Striplin each drove in a run.
Oglethorpe would score one run in the seventh to provide the 13-5 final.
Pfeiffer's Grayson Huneycutt earned the pitching win for Pfeiffer evening his record to 1-1 on the season while Bryce Marsh picked up the win in game one, picking up his first win of the season.
Huneycutt struck out four batters while working through 3.1 innings, allowing just two hits and one run in game two while Marsh threw 3.0 innings in game one, allowing two hits and no runs while striking out three batters.
The Falcons will take to the road this upcoming weekend, jumping back into USA South play with a three-game series at LaGrange. Game one of the series will be on Friday night, April 5 at 7:00 p.m. at Phil Williams Stadium in LaGrange, Ga.
