The Pfeiffer men's basketball team kicks off its 2017-18 campaign tonight with a home game against Barber Scotia in the StatGeek Tipoff Classic.
Head Coach Jeremy Currier enters tonight needing just four wins to reach 100 for his coaching career. 89 of his 96 coaching victories have come at the helm of the Falcons, including 26 a season ago. The magical 2016-17 season concluded with an NCAA Tournament appearance and a regular season Conference Carolinas title but much has changed since last March.
The Falcons now call the USA South Athletic Conference home and are transitioning to NCAA Division III this season. Many of the faces on the team have changed but a couple constants remain aside from Currier. Senior guard Josh Calhoun enters the season as one of the best players in the region. Calhoun averaged 16 points per game and joined the 1,000 point club a year ago. The Rockingham, N.C. native knocked down a career-high 41.2 percent of his three pointers and averaged 2.3 steals per game. Now, as one of the focal points of the offense, Calhoun will be counted on to do much of the heavy lifting on both ends of the court.
Also returning for the Falcons is junior guard Brendan Jones who played in all 31 games last season and averaged 6.1 points and 2.4 rebounds per contest. Senior Eric Ambrosio enters the starting lineup after a junior campaign that saw him play in 16 games and score 2.4 points per game. Brian Harper was a steady point guard last season and will be relied upon more in his sophomore season. Harper had 75 assists to just 30 turnovers as a freshman and averaged 1.4 steals per game.
The new look roster features 10 newcomers led by 6'5" junior Nolan Whitener, a transfer from Catawba Valley Community College. Another transfer, Jevon Patton from USC Aiken, will provide additional depth and speed on a team that looks to score more than the 104.3 they averaged a season ago. Five freshman
Tonight is the first of back-to-back games between the Falcons and Sabers. On Sunday afternoon, the two will meet in Concord in the finale of the StatGeek Tipoff Classic. These two programs also played each other twice in 2014-15 with Pfeiffer coming out victorious on both occasions.
