MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Pfeiffer men's lacrosse team (2-5) got its first home win of the season with an 11-8 non-conference victory over Walsh (0-3) on Wednesday evening. Blade Garlow and Kyle Barna each finished with hat tricks for Pfeiffer and Jared Nelson scored twice. Ryan Cummings registered a goal and three assists, while Mike Moorehead made 12 saves.
The Falcons were a season-best 16-for-17 on clears and only turned the ball over 12 times. Despite being outshot 35-22, Pfeiffer was more efficient and scored 11 times on 15 shots on goal.
Walsh held a 29-19 advantage in ground balls and won 16 of the 23 face offs on the night.
The Cavaliers ran out to a quick 3-1 advantage but Pfeiffer would respond in a big way. In the final 3:03 of the first quarter, Barna, Cody Lamond and Garlow would each find the back of the net to give Pfeiffer a 4-3 advantage.
The scoring spurt would carry over to the second quarter as Cummings, Barna and Nelson converted for the Falcons who scored six unanswered goals to end the half.
Nelson scored with 12:41 to go in the third quarter to push Pfeiffer's consecutive goal stretch to seven in a row before Walsh answered at the 11:33 mark. In total, Pfeiffer held Walsh without a goal for exactly 25 minutes of game action.
The Cavaliers were able to narrow the gap to 9-7 with 1:10 to play in the third quarter but Garlow scored with just three seconds left in the frame to push the lead to 10-7.
Walsh scored their final goal of the game at the 13:55 mark of the fourth quarter and Barna completed the hat trick with 11:04 to play.
Barna also led the Falcons in ground balls with four and a trio of players caused two turnovers. Garlow led Pfeiffer with six shots and also added two assists for a five point evening.
Pfeiffer will look to continue its winning ways as they travel to Chowan on March 18 for a Conference Carolinas tilt. Faceoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
