Big Third Quarter Lifts Guilford to 16-13 Win Over Pfeiffer Men's Lacrosse
Misenheimer, N.C. (March 20, 2019) – Visiting Guilford College scored five goals in the third quarter while holding the Pfeiffer University men's lacrosse team scoreless in a 16-13 win over the Falcons at a cold and drizzly Lefko Field on Wednesday night.

Senior John Allen scored six goals while Jared Nelson added three goals and four assists for the Falcons in the losing cause. Teammate Treven King scored a pair of goals for Pfeiffer while Josh Reffey and Ben Zahorec each added a scoring tally. Jacob Leone dished two assists while King, Reffey and Zahorec each had one assist.
How it Happened
The Falcons and Quakers were evenly matched in the first half, as neither team managed to build a lead larger than two goals. Pfeiffer opened the scoring at the 13:44 mark of the first quarter after Allen fired a shot past the Guilford goalkeeper to put the Falcons out front 1-0. Guilford then responded with three goals, grabbing the 3-1 lead. Allen scored again for the Falcons on an assist from Nelson to pull to 3-2 with 3:28 left in the opening quarter.
After Guilford made it 4-2, Allen and Nelson teamed together again to pull to 4-3 with 1:57 left. Guilford added a goal with 43 second left to take the 5-3 lead after the first quarter.
Luke Cox opened the second quarter with a score on a feed from Ben Zahorec at 14:04, but Guilford responded with an unassisted goal at 13:23 to go ahead 6-4. Nelson and Treven King notched back-to-back goals for Pfeiffer to tie the game at 6-6, but Guilford jumped ahead 8-6 with goals at 4:20 and 2:53. Pfeiffer closed the second quarter with two straight goals, one by Nelson and a man-up goal from Allen on a Nelson feed. The latter goal provided the 8-8 halftime score.
Guilford started the third quarter hot, scoring five goals while holding the Falcons scoreless, taking the 13-8 lead.
The Falcons finally broke the drought at the 14:04 mark of the fourth quarter when Nelson scored an unassisted goal at 14:04, pulling Pfeiffer to 13-9. Guilford then struck for three goals to gain the 16-10 lead. The Falcons would make it interesting in the latter portion of the quarter scoring three goals within 26-second span with Zahorec scoring with 31 seconds left. John Allen would add the final two goals for the Falcons to provide the 16-13 final.
Pfeiffer will get back into USA South play this upcoming Saturday, March 23 when they host rival Methodist in a 3:30 p.m. game at Lefko Field.
