LYNCHBURG, VA -- In the finale of the Schellenberger Classic hosted by Lynchburg College, Pfeiffer (0-2) saw a late 1-0 lead evaporate in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Roanoke (1-0-1) on Sunday afternoon.
The match was a defensive battle until Darwin Ramirez broke through and ended the scoreless stretch in the 73rd minute for Pfeiffer's first tally of the season. It was also Ramirez's first goal of his career.
However, Roanoke wasted little time in evening the match. Moments after Ramirez found the back of the net, Jose Robertson netted the equalizer and shifted the momentum. 4:14 later, Robertson found Sam Rauf for the game-winner.
David Chavarria made his first career start in goal for the Falcons. The freshman made four saves in the losing effort.
For the second straight match, Pfeiffer recorded five shots. Four of those attempts came in the final 45 minutes of play and Caleb Bratager registered three shots.
Roanoke held a 14-5 advantage in shots and a 6-0 lead in corner kicks. A total of six yellow cards were handed out in the match.
Pfeiffer will turn its attention towards defending their own turf on Wednesday in the home opener. The Falcons will bring a streak of 32 consecutive home wins into Wednesday's tilt with USA South rival Piedmont. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
