MADISON, N.J. -- In just her sixth at-bat of the season, Sydney Bowles hit a walk-off single that scored Bailey Sherrill to send the Falcons (36-5) to a 2-1 victory in the bottom of the seventh against FDU-Florham (19-18) on Wednesday afternoon. The No. 1 seed Falcons advance to the semifinal of the ECAC Tournament and face No. 4 seed Penn St. Behrend at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
It was a pitchers duel for most of the afternoon with Kiana Millsaps and Linda Rizzo dominating hitters. The Devils scored their lone run in the top of the first but Millsaps rebounded to toss six shutout innings the rest of the way.
The Falcons would even the score in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout from Bailey Sherrill. The game would remain tied until the bottom of the seventh inning. Sherrill was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Sara Brown bunted her to second. A base hit from Tiffany Bartholomew put runners on the corners with one out. Head Coach Monte Sherrill summoned Bowles to pinch hit and she delivered a single to the pitcher that won it for Pfeiffer.
Millsaps improved to 23-4 in the circle and struck out five batters on the day. Kari Westerbeek had two hits for Pfeiffer and Millsaps went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored with the bat.
Pfeiffer is now two wins away from being crowned the ECAC Division III Softball Champions. The host Penn St. Behrend is up next with a 1 p.m. first pitch in the Semifinal round.
