MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Mount Olive College outscored Pfeiffer University 14-7 in overtime to grab a 76-69 victory in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action on Monday night inside Kornegay Arena. Jasmine Whitby led all scorers with 30 points and 11 rebounds as the Trojans improve to 14-6 overall, 11-3 in league play. The Lady Falcons came up just short of the road upset falling to 8-12, 7-7, led by Celeste Caudill's 27 points.
A pair of Vontenea Williams free throws with six seconds left in regulation boosted the back-and-forth contest into overtime with its seventh tie of the night. In the extra session, Whitby gave the Trojans a two-point lead with a pair of free throws while a layup by Jasmine McDonald later pushed the lead to three with 2:25 remaining.
Caudill would square the contest for the eighth time with her sixth triple of the night just seconds later. Mount Olive went on to outscore Pfeiffer 10-3 over the final 2:11 with five of those points coming from Brittany Miller at the charity stripe.
The Lady Falcons slowly erased a 15-point second half deficit, that stood at 10 points at the break, finally knotting the contest at 44 with 12:15 remaining in regulation on three triples, two from Caudill and one from Shelley Reese. Whitby helped the Trojans get back out to a four point lead with 10:43 to go before Brittany Cox drained one of her two triples on the night two and a half minutes later.
Mount Olive would have no more than a four point lead for the remainder of the half as a crucial foul with 26 seconds left gave the Lady Falcons life. Trailing by three, Caudill would be fouled attempting another three point shot and go on to make all three from the line for a 60-60 ballgame. With 14 seconds left, Whitby dropped in a layup to put the hosts up two, but Williams' free throws soon followed to send the game into extra time.
Behind Whitby, Alyssa Luebs contributed with 14 points while Laporsha Davis chipped in with 10. McDonald also pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds in the win. Christina Harvey trailed Caudill's 27 with 14 of her own while Cox finished with 10. Pfeiffer shot 43% from the field to Mount Olive's 38%, but the Trojans dominated on the boards 49-25.
Pfeiffer will now take a much-needed few days off before hosting Belmont Abbey on Saturday night. The Lady Falcons and Lady Crusaders will tip at 5:30 p.m.
