The Pfeiffer women's basketball team continued their winning ways on Saturday as they defeated Averett (8-6) 77-66. The Falcons (9-1) extend their win streak to 6 games. Freshman A'Maya McClain was the high scorer on the afternoon as she scored 22 points while going 7-12 from the floor, including going 2-3 from behind the arc.
It was a tight game throughout, with each team fighting back and forth down to the wire. Pfeiffer slowly pulled away late in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Cougars 18-11 in the final 10 minutes. Senior point guard Dajea Scott scored 14 points and dished out 5 assists on the contest. Another senior, Kayla Whitworth, had her best night of the season off the bench for the Falcons scoring 11 points and collecting 8 rebounds.
With just under 2 minutes to play in the game, Pfeiffer had a 70-66 lead with Averett closing the gap. However, the Falcons held Averett scoreless over the last 1:48 and went on a 7-0 to seal the victory.
It was another big day for Pfeiffer's defense, as they forced 20 turnovers, continuing their streak of 20 turnover games. On offense, Pfeiffer won the battle in the paint, outscoring Averett 46-32. The Falcons' bench also came up big, outscoring the Cougars' bench 22-9 for the game.
Sophomore guard Brooke Carthon led the way for Averett scoring 16 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Senior Samm Chandler also helped the Cougars with 15 points of her own. Four of the five starters for Averett scored in double figures, but it was not enough as the Cougars dropped their sixth game of the season.
Next up for the Falcons is a Sunday afternoon matchup with Greensboro College inside Merner Gym. Tip off is scheduled for 2:00.
