MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University's women's lacrosse team (9-6, 7-3 CC) wrapped up the 2017 regular season with a difficult 20-9 loss to Mount Olive (10-6, 8-1) at NE Lefko field on Tuesday afternoon.
Junior Molly O'Friel scored seven of the Falcons' nine goals on the day, adding an assist with a team-high five ground balls and six forced turnovers. It was her third straight performance with at least five goals, and her total of 58 for the season ranks 2nd in Conference Carolinas behind Emmanuel's Tara Larson (61).
She is just five shy of Lyndsey Boswell's (2002) single-season school record of 63 goals and is currently in sole possession of No. 2 on the all-time list.
Mount Olive scored the first four goals of the game and did not look back from there. Sophomore Airea Willams found the back of the net for Pfeiffer to make it 4-1, but the Trojans took a 7-1 lead by the 14:33 mark of the first half after two goals from Micheala Ciciarelli and another from Jackie Kaderabek. O'Friel battled with three first-half goals, but the Falcons trailed at the half, 11-5.
UMO came out of the half the same way it did in the first, recording two quick scores to give it an eight-goal advantage. O'Friel responded with two more within 37 seconds apart to bring it back to six, but a 7-0 run from the Trojans kicked in the running clock and placed the game out of reach.
Despite a tie in draw controls at 15 apiece, the Falcons coughed up 27 turnovers to UMO's 17 and were outshot 36-18.
Pfeiffer will host its Conference Carolinas quarterfinals matchup against an opponent to be determined on Wednesday, April 26. Stay tuned for more details.
