MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Pfeiffer baseball team (11-12) erased a 7-2 deficit with a 6-run fifth inning and came away with an 11-9 victory over Montreat (8-13) on Tuesday afternoon. The win improves Pfeiffer's record at home to 8-2 on the season.
On a chilly and windy afternoon, Pfeiffer used four long balls to earn the victory. Cameron Reid earned the win in relief as the freshman tossed two innings to improve to 3-0. Xavier Rodriguez earned his second save with a scoreless ninth and went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI at the dish.
After giving up a run in the first, Pfeiffer pushed across two runs in the bottom of the frame on a Christian Marciano double. However, the Cavaliers scored the next six runs of the game off the bat of Andres Cancio who went 3-for-5 with three runs, two homers and six runs batted in.
Facing a 7-2 deficit in the fifth, Jordan Eckard's RBI single cut the lead to four. Tanner Mathis stepped to the plate with two on and one out and crushed a pitch over the left center wall to make the score 7-6. Marciano made it back-to-back jacks with a solo shot to even the score and Rodriguez brought home Brandall Peters with a single to push Pfeiffer ahead 8-7.
Montreat tied the game at eight but the long ball would return in the seventh inning. Kirby Lambert crushed a pinch-hit solo bomb to left field and Cody McKenzie hit a two-run shot to give Pfeiffer some insurance runs.
Pfeiffer laced seven extra base hits in the contest and the bullpen went 5.1 innings without allowing an earned run in relief of Will Altemueller.
Pfeiffer returns to action with a big Conference Carolinas weekend series with Mount Olive. Game one of the three game series is set for 6 p.m. on Friday night.
