MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- Fresh off a 2016-17 Conference Carolinas regular season championship and a trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament, the Pfeiffer men's basketball team has announced its 2017-18 schedule.
The Falcons will be changing conferences and divisions as they begin a new tradition in the USA South Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III. What won't change for the Falcons this season is the brand of basketball. Pfeiffer led all of Division I and II in points per game (104.3) a season ago. Pfeiffer also led the nation in total steals (391), forced turnovers (725) and turnover margin (+10.4) en route to breaking 11 program records and a national ranking.
"I expect our team to play very fast and incredibly hard every night," commented Head Coach Jeremy Currier. "I feel that we may have more speed at some positions than last year's team. Our upperclassmen have returned to campus determined and in great physical shape and we are excited about a few of the recruits that we will add to our roster in October. Last season we won 15 straight in Merner Gym and had the best home court support in the Conference Carolinas, we are hoping to bring the same level of energy to the USA South. I believe our players are ready to compete and play with an edge that will help us be successful this season."
The 2017-18 campaign opens with the StatGeek TipOff Classic on November 15 and 19 as the Falcons have a home-and-home matchup with Barber Scotia College. Pfeiffer hosts the Sabers at 7 p.m. on November 15 and then travels to Concord, NC on the 19th for a 4 p.m. matchup.
Up next for the Falcons is Averett University who was the top seed in last year's USA South Conference Tournament. Pfeiffer hosts the Cougars on Dec. 9 and travel to Danville, VA on Jan. 9. Pfeiffer closes out the 2017 portion of the schedule with a 4 p.m. New Year's Eve home game against William Peace.
The Falcons play two of their first three on the road to start 2018 before hosting the Garmon Mechanical Invitational in Merner Gym on Jan. 11-13. Pfeiffer plays host to Columbia International and Carolina Christian over the two-day invitational.
After a three-game road swing, Pfeiffer returns home on the weekend of Jan. 27-28 and hosts the Four Seasons Realty Coaches vs. Cancer against N.C. Wesleyan and Greensboro. The men's coaching staff will coach that weekend in suits and sneakers to raise awareness for the disease. Additionally, the Falcons will host the Stanly County YMCA food drive against N.C. Wesleyan and will pair with Go4thegoal to wear gold shoelaces for pediatric cancer against Greensboro.
On Feb. 11, Pfeiffer will travel to LaGrange who was last year's USA South Tournament champions. The Panthers have won three straight conference tournaments and have four straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
Senior night will be on Feb. 14 when the Falcons host Methodist at 7:30 p.m. The regular season finale will take place on February 19 with a road trip to Piedmont.
