Methodist Downs Pfeiffer 85-77 in USA South Opener
Misenheimer, N.C. (Nov. 28, 2018) – Visiting Methodist University used a fast start and limited Pfeiffer University to just one field goal in the first 10:22 of the game in an 85-77 win in men's basketball action from Merner Gym on Wednesday night.
After senior Kyle Riddley (Charlotte, N.C.) posted a layup at the 18:56 mark putting the Falcons ahead 2-0, the Methodist defense stymied Pfeiffer's normally reliable shooting, forcing 11 straight misses. Riddley would then break the scoreless drought with 8:59 remaining in the first half.
Pfeiffer would regroup, drawing to within 19-16 following a dunk from Craig Sabb (Goose Creek, S.C.) but the Monarchs would eventually stretch their lead back to 31-26 at the half.
In the second half, Riddley put Pfeiffer back within striking distance with a jumper to open the half, but Methodist would respond again, this time stretching their cushion to 60-45 on a layup with 10:47 to play.
Pfeiffer would make it interesting late in the game when Nolan Whitener converted a layup and was fouled. His free throw at the 1:54 mark would cut the deficit to just 72-67, but that would be the closes the Falcons would get, as Methodist took the 85-77 win.
As a team, Pfeiffer shot a season-low 39.1% from the field (27-of-69) and 25.6% (10-of-39) from long range while Methodist managed a 53.3% outing on a 32-of-60 effort from the field.
Four players from each team managed double figures, with Pfeiffer getting 22 points and 13 rebounds from Riddley followed by Josiah Avington (Fredericksburg, Va.) with 16 points to go along with four rebounds. Sabb had 13 points while Tyjarek Simmons (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) had 10 points.
Methodist got a game-high 27 points from Dante Burden while Kaymon Mitchell had 18.
Teammates Sam Mingledoff and Garren Dearman each had 10 points in helping the Monarchs improve to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in USA South play.
The loss drops Pfeiffer to 0-1 in league play and 2-1 overall.
Pfeiffer will have a short turnaround, hosting Johnson University on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in Merner Gym.
