Pfeiffer Men's Soccer Takes 4-3 Season Opening Win at Guilford
Greensboro, N.C. (Sept. 1 2019) – The Pfeiffer University men's soccer team withstood a furious Guilford comeback bid late in the match to hold on, winning 4-3 in the 2019 season opener on Sunday night at Herb Appenzeller Field in Greensboro, N.C.
Pfeiffer got on the board first when Caleb Bratager received a pass from freshman Ross Genetti at the 10:01 mark to put Pfeiffer up 1-0. The Falcon lead would be boosted to 2-0 when
Connor Morgan scored off a pass from Payton Leary at 30:49.
Guilford would cut the lead to 2-1 on a penalty kick at 49:47, but less than four minutes later, Pfeiffer would be the beneficiary of a Guilford own goal, stretching the Falcon lead to 3-1. Guilford would take on a goal from Kyle Broderick at 57:40 to cut the lead to 3-2.
Pfeiffer's Diego Moran made it 4-2 at the 64:00 minute mark on a slick pass from Bratager. Guilford would respond, cutting the lead to 4-3 at the 75:47 mark on a Kennedy Nzekwe goal.
Pfeiffer then had to fight off numerous late challenges from the Quakers. Guilford just missed tying the match in the 85th minute when a slow shot trickled just left of an open Pfeiffer net.
The Falcons then were able to limit the Quaker shots in the final two minutes to earn the 4-3 win.
David Chavarria earned the win in goal for the Falcons, as he faced 26 Quaker shots while making eight saves.
The Falcons will return to action on Sept 7 when they travel to take on Rutgers-Newark. They will follow up that meeting with a matchup with Drew University on Sept. 8 in Newark, N.J.
