ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Pfeiffer softball team (30-4) earned a road split with N.C. Wesleyan (21-13) on Saturday afternoon at Edge Field. Pfeiffer won game one 12-1 in five innings but stumbled in game two, losing 6-1.
Kiana Millsaps broke the record for most wins by a pitcher in a single season in the opener, earning her 20th victory in the circle. The junior went all five innings and allowed just one run on four hits and didn't walk a batter.
The top four batters in the order did most of the damage as the quartet of Vada Blue Sherrill, Stephanie Fortner, Makenzie Pennell and Millsaps combined to go 7-for-13 with seven runs scored and 10 runs batted in. Fortner, Pennell and Millsaps all homered in the game and Pennell and Millsaps each added a double.
The Falcons pushed across five runs in the top of the third and seven more in the top of the fifth to take a convincing win in game one.
The bats were silenced in the finale as Pfeiffer was able to muster just four hits. Amanda Sports and Millsaps each hit doubles but the Falcons were shut down by Beth Braswell who improved to 10-4 by tossing a complete game and striking out four.
Braswell stared at the plate for the Battling Bishops as well, going 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs batted in.
Pfeiffer is off until next Saturday when they travel to Montreat for a doubleheader starting at noon.
