ERIE, Pa. -- The No. 1 seeded Pfeiffer Falcons (37-5) captured the program's first ECAC Division III Softball Championship on Sunday afternoon with a dominant 8-0 road victory in five innings against Penn St.-Behrend (32-13). The win, coupled with the men's tennis championship yesterday, gives Pfeiffer University two championships in two days.
Junior pitcher Kiana Millsaps wrapped up a splendid season by tossing five shutout innings to earn her 24th victory of the year. Millsaps allowed just two hits and struck out a pair of batters while facing just 18 batters on the day. Millsaps junior campaign ends with a 24-4 record and a 2.03 ERA.
Offensively, Millsaps went 1-for-2 with a run and three runs driven in while hitting out of the cleanup spot. Pfeiffer got home runs from Makenzie Pennell and Kari Westerbeek to blow the game open in the third inning. Vada Blue Sherrill went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and added a stolen base. The junior shortstop finished the year a perfect 56-for-56 in stolen bases and broke the program record for batting average (.508), on-base percentage (.593), slugging percentage (.992), runs (64), home runs (16), runs batted in (69) and stolen bases. Sherrill only struck out three times on the year and drew 29 walks in 130 at-bats.
Millsaps opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. Ahead 1-0, the Falcons exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a pair of 2-run bombs from Pennell and Westerbeek. In the bottom of the fourth, Pennell drove in one with a sac fly and Millsaps pushed the lead to eight with a 2-run single.
Millsaps put up a zero in the top of the fifth to invoke the mercy rule as the Falcons celebrated a championship. Thanks to a victory today, Pfeiffer now owns an 83-13 record over its last 96 games dating back to the start of 2017.
With a host of talented players returning next season, Pfeiffer will look to defend the ECAC Championship and go back-to-back in 2019.
