MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- The Pfeiffer women's soccer team (6-4) saw its five game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Salem (10-2) on Wednesday evening at N.E. Lefko Field. The Spirits netted the game-winner in the 77th minute to come away with a 2-1 victory.
Salem took an early lead in the 8th minute as Jordan Lanier got her shot past Kaley Hyatt to give the Spirits a 1-0 advantage. Maddie Capel had an answer in the 22nd minute off a perfect ball from Gabby Bosak. Capel would find the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season.
Each team would have a goal taken off the board over the next 55 minutes of play. Salem thought they had the tie-breaker but a handball was called, negating the goal. In the second half, Cayci Eaton put one past the keeper but was nullified due to an offside call.
Lanier took a throw-in by her team's bench that found Kylie Dillow just outside the box whose shot beat Hyatt and gave the Spirits a sixth consecutive victory. Pfeiffer would battle late but couldn't find the tying goal.
The evenly matched battle saw Salem outshoot Pfeiffer by a narrow 12-11 margin. Pfeiffer took all six corner kicks on the evening but the Falcons only put two shots on goal. Hyatt made five saves in the losing effort.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Saturday afternoon as they host William Peace at 2 p.m. Prior to the match, Pfeiffer will honor the contributions of its four seniors.
