Manson's Golden Goal Lifts Falcons to 2-1 OT Win Over Methodist
Misenheimer, N.C. (Sept. 29, 2018) – Sophomore Meredith Manson netted a goal a little over two minutes into overtime to lift the Pfeiffer University women's soccer team to a 2-1 USA South win over visiting Methodist on Homecoming.
The visiting Monarchs struck first in the 22nd minute when Alexa Smith fired a shot that deflected off a Falcon defender, causing a fast spin on the ball that rolled just out of the reach of Pfeiffer goalkeeper Kaley Hyatt.
Methodist would take the 1-0 lead into the halftime break but in the 53rd minute,
Sophia Griffin (Durham, N.C) knotted the match at 1-1 with her goal in traffic about 12 yards in front of the Methodist goal.
The teams would battle the rest of the way to a stalemate, eventually leading to overtime.
The 2-1 overtime win for the Falcons is the second consecutive match that has the same result. Pfeiffer knocked off Meredith by the same 2-1 tally on Sept. 21.
With the win, Pfeiffer improves to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league play while Methodist drops to 4-3 and
0-1.
